Alberta Health Services announced today some opportunities available for those wanting to volunteer at Chinook Regional Hospital. Opportunities exist in the following units: emergency, pediatrics, renal dialysis, and geriatric assessment and rehabilitation.

Volunteers in this department are needed seven days a week and should be available for four-hour shifts between 09:00 and midnight.
Pediatrics patients require one-on-one care, and volunteers can read stories to, watch videos with, or play games with patients and their siblings. Volunteers in this department are needed seven days a week and should be available for two-hour shifts from 09:00–20:00.

Volunteers in the Geriatric Assessment and Rehabilitation unit greet patients in the dining room; offer them coffee, tea or juice; and assist with opening packages and cutting up meals as required. Socializing with patients is encouraged. Volunteers are needed seven days a week for shifts at 7:45 to 8:45,
11:30 to 12:30 and/or 16:30 to 17:30.
Dog owners and their pets are needed to visit patients and residents in a relaxed atmosphere. These visits provide companionship and socialization for clients who have limited family or social networks. Dogs must be recently immunized and demonstrate a calm, friendly demeanour. This opportunity takes place Wednesdays from 13:30 to 14:30 in Psychiatry and from 17:45 to 19:00 in the Geriatric Assessment and Rehabilitation Unit.
Volunteer musicians, singers, storytellers, poets and other performers are needed to share their talents at bedside. Patient visiting and socialization is encouraged. Hours for these volunteer opportunities are flexible.
