Living with a chronic disease: The Better Choices, Better Health Program

Local residents living with a chronic disease are welcome to attend an Alberta Health Services (AHS) program created to assist participants take control of their health and improve their quality of life.

Beginning on July 16, a 6-week series of workshops under the name Better Choices, Better Health will be available in Lethbridge. The workshops are designed to aid Albertans with ongoing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, asthma, high blood pressure, chronic pain and obesity. In order to ensure a better understanding of the challenges participants face, trained volunteers, many of whom live with a chronic disease, will lead the workshop sessions.

The workshop topics include handling pain and fatigue, managing medication, dealing with difficult emotions, healthy eating and activity, problem solving and goal setting, and communicating with health care providers.

Family members and caregivers are also welcome to attend the workshops.

Better Choices, Better Health is being held at the Building Healthy Lifestyles office at 160 Lethbridge Centre on every Monday from July 16 to August 20, beginning at 9:00 and ending at 11:30.

As a part of the 5-year Health Action Plan developed by the Government of Alberta and AHS, the goal of the program is to instigate the sharing of information and best practices to prevent and manage chronic diseases.

As the provincial health authority, Alberta Health Services has a mission to provide a patient-focused quality health system, that is accessible and sustainable, to the more than 3.7 million Albertan adults and children it is responsible for.
